About the product
Discover one of northern Sweden's most authentic delicacies – traditional Swedish coffee cheese made from the milk of the rare Swedish Mountain Cattle.
Coffee cheese (Kaffeost) is a unique northern Swedish cheese with a mild, rich milky flavour and a wonderfully soft, slightly chewy texture. It is an integral part of northern Swedish and Sámi food culture, traditionally served in a cup of hot coffee. But coffee cheese is far more versatile than that – it is equally delicious as a starter, main course or dessert.
Our coffee cheese is made from the milk of Swedish Mountain Cattle raised at Fjällkogård Lappland in Vuollerim, near the Arctic Circle. The cheese is shaped and oven-baked, giving it its characteristic golden surface with beautifully toasted spots and a mild, rounded flavour.
Made from the milk of the rare Swedish Mountain Cattle
Swedish Mountain Cattle are one of Sweden's oldest native cattle breeds and have played an important role in northern Swedish agriculture for generations. The breed is particularly well adapted to the harsh northern climate and is now considerably rarer than it once was.
By choosing coffee cheese from Vuollerim, you help preserve Swedish Mountain Cattle, traditional northern Swedish cheesemaking and a valuable part of Sweden's culinary heritage.
Kaffeost has Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status, meaning that the product must be produced according to specific requirements within a defined geographical area. This designation protects the cheese's origin, traditional production methods and unique character. For customers, it serves as a mark of authenticity and quality, confirming that they are purchasing a genuine regional speciality with deep roots in northern Sweden's culinary traditions.
How to enjoy Swedish coffee cheese
The traditional way to enjoy coffee cheese is to cut it into small cubes and place them in a cup of hot coffee. The cheese softens in the heat without completely melting, developing a wonderfully tender texture while absorbing the aromas of the coffee.
However, there are many other delicious ways to serve coffee cheese:
-
In coffee: Cut into small cubes and add directly to a cup of hot coffee, just as it has traditionally been enjoyed in northern Sweden.
-
As a starter: Gently pan-fry or warm the cheese and serve with cloudberry jam.
-
As a dessert: Serve slightly warm with heated cloudberries or other berries.
-
On a cheese board: An exciting and authentic northern Swedish alternative to more traditional cheeses.
