About the product

Smoked eel can be enjoyed in many ways. We ourselves think that it is at its best when you serve it in a simple way as it is together with a little dill, lemon and sour cream. Or why not like our friends in Denmark who eat it together with finely chopped onion and an egg yolk. A real Nordic delicacy!

Eel fishing is inherently controversial and we were initially very hesitant to sell Swedish eel, but after talking to eel fishermen, we have changed our minds. The reason for this is that fishing paradoxically actually benefits the eel population in the long term. The biggest threat to the eel in Sweden is hydropower, which kills thousands of eels in its turbines as the eels swim up through Swedish rivers. If we didn't have hydropower, we most likely wouldn't have an endangered eel tribe either.

The few professional fishermen who have permission to fish in Sweden help the eel tribe mainly in two ways:
1. They capture young eels that come up in rivers and transport them past the power plants in so-called "trap and transport".
2. They collect valuable statistics for the Norwegian Sea and Water Authority and SLU, which facilitate their research and control of the stock. The research mainly leads to more methods to protect the eel.

Both of these things could theoretically be done by individuals, interest groups, and government agencies, but it is very difficult to achieve on a large scale, or with sufficient expertise, unless it is managed by professionals with a strong long-term financial incentive to grow the eel population. That's where the professional fishermen come in.

Of course, we will not abolish hydropower, so then we have to make sure that the eels can get past the turbines. If we were to stop eel fishing completely, the eel population would most likely decrease as there would not be enough trapping and transport. The stock has been stable for a few years now and we hope that it will soon turn around again.

For us at Swedish Wild, sustainability and concern for animals and nature are the basis of our values. We have chosen to sell eels in particular because we believe that fishing actually benefits the stock in the long term and that on a small scale we support Swedish professional fishermen, traditions and the countryside. The eel accounts for a very small part of our turnover and, financially speaking, plays no role whatsoever for us.

High quality game meat

Our concept is to offer the best game meat available, directly to you, the end customer. We make sure you can buy the cuts that are otherwise only sold to wholesalers and fine restaurants.

100% natural

We would argue that there is no meat in the world that is as gentle on animals, requires so little of the earth's resources to produce, and has such a low carbon footprint as Swedish game meat.

A healthy alternative

Game meat is naturally lean and nutritious because the animals live a free range life and graze naturally. This makes for a cleaner and healthier meat choice.
